End of Year Reflection

Your very last assignment is to post a comment about your year in Grade 2.

Treats 4 Us Recipes

Apple Crisp

Ingredients

60 mL Butter

120 mL Brown Sugar (or less)

250 mL Oats

5 mL Cinnamon

700 g or approximately 500 mL or apples diced thinly

30 ml (or less) lemon juice

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350° F

2. Butter the baking dish

3. Mix together butter, sugar, oats, cinnamon in a bowl

4. Toss apples with lemon juice

5. Spoon into baking dish

6. Sprinkle toppings over apples

7. Bake in the oven for 1 hour or until apples are softened

Oatmeal Raisin/Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 Cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

½ tsp cinnamon

½ cup brown sugar

2 cups oats

½ cup raisin or chocolate chip (may choose to use less)

2 tbsp butter

1 egg

¼ cup apple sauce (may choose to add slightly more depending on preference)

½ tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350°F

Mix dry and wet separately-then combine (mixes better using hands don’t over mix)

Drop tablespoon upon baking- flatten slightly

Bake 10-12 minutes- until edge is slightly brown (don’t over bake they will become too dry)

Makes 2 dozen small cookies

Language Arts Blog and Blue Spruce

During the next two weeks students reading logs will be used in conjunction with the language arts blog.

All students should be entering 2-4 comments on the blog on each book.

Students can respond to the book in many different ways:
1. Make a connection
2. Respond to another comment
Use these prompts to help you piggy back off someone’s comment

3. Describe your favourite element in the book (genre, characters, setting, plot)

A notice has been sent home to families to invite you to an information meeting on May 6th at 7:00 pm regarding the International Languages Program. You are ready to start blogging about your thoughts and ideas more now! Remember if you want you can write your prediction in Microsoft Word than copy and paste your work into the comment section of the language arts blog.

Tonight you are going to make a prediction about the book Boo Hoo Bird which we are reading in class tomorrow.

Traditions and Music

The students in room 206 would like to thank you for your help with our investigational booklets and contributing entries onto the blog. Student enthusiasm to read, write and share on the blog has been a positive experience for the class. All projects will be posted after the March Break on the classroom blog.

During the March Break the students will need your assistance once again:

Social Studies: We would like to share traditional music from our culture that is used during a celebration of a tradition in our family. Please send a CD with a preselected song for the students to share with the group during the last two weeks in March. All CD’s should be handed in by Wednesday March 24, 2010.

Students will present their song to the class and will be asked the following question:
1. What tradition is this music used for?
2. Why is music used during this tradition celebration?
3. Describe the connection between ones tradition and music used in different family celebrations.
4. Bring in a CD with a preselected song (CD will be returned)

Have a safe and adventurous March Break!!

Social Studies- All investigational books and picture are now due back to class.

Please send pictures (hard copy, on CD or on a USB Key) all items will be returned next week or students can draw a picture for each celebration.

NEW- students and family member can now post a comment in our social studies subject blog. I have sent home a step by step instruction sheet on how to go onto the social studies blog. Also the student were given a chance earlier this week to post a comment. All comment need to be posted by Wednesday February 17, 2010.

Math- Students have learned to tell time to the hour and half hour. Daily practice is highly recommended on an anolog clock.

Valentines Cards- Students can distribute Valentines Cards on Tuesday February 16, 2010. I will send a class list home with all students tomorrow.

SOCIAL STUDIES- INVESTIGATING OUR FAMILY TRADITIONS

The Students in Room 206 are going to become investigational reporters and will be required to interview their family about different traditions. Students will be using their investigational books to record their thoughts. All books are due back on Thursday February 11, 2010.

Social Studies- we are studying different celebrations and traditions that our families celebrate. Students will be posting comments for the first time in the blog next week about family traditions and celebrations. We will also be researching and putting together a timeline of family traditions and events an outline will be going home Thurday February 4, 2010.

Math- Discuss different ways to decompose numbers at home using double families, strategy 10, addition and subtraction

Reading- Book bags will be going home each week with library and/or classroom books please read and record in your reading log and return to class on Day 5. Also we are focusing on different reading strategies and how they help us to comprehend and understand the story. This week we are focusing on Prediction. Next week a bookmark will be coming home with the first 3 reading strategies. Please review while you read nightly with your child.

Martin's Day at RTH

Wow, it has been an amazing month preparing for this big event at RTH. I would like to congratulate the students in Room 206 for making McMurrich proud and singing in the Freedom Choir. Congratulations!A big thank you to all the parents for volunteering on Sunday and Monday without your help this day would have not been possible.

1. Make 10 achieveable goals that you can accomplish this year. All commitment cards are due back in class by Friday January 29, 2010. Also register your 10 commitments at www.giveyour10.com and an additional $ 10 will be donated on your behalf.

We will be starting our new Social Studies Unit on Celebrations. Each student needs to complete a family history sheet for tomorrow. They have been provided with a template where they are to draw the flag(s) of where their ancestors are from and fill out some question about the celebrations/holidays that you celebrate during the year.

Martin Luther King Day at Roy Thomson Hall

The students in Room 203, 210 and 206 will be participating at Roy Thomson Hall on Monday January 18, 2010.

SUNDAY JANUARY 17, 2010

Arrival time to and from McMurrich:
We have received an updated itinerary for the Sunday January 17, 2010 rehearsal. All students are to arrive at McMurrich at 12:30pm to depart for Roy Thomson Hall. Please do not be late we will be leaving promptly at 12:30pm. All students will be returning to McMurrich at 5:00 pm at the front doors. This is different from the permission form that was sent home last week.

Clothing/Litterless Snack
* Students need to be dressed appropriately for the weather
* Bring a litterless snack to eat during the dress rehearsal

MONDAY JANUARY 18, 2010
Arrival time to and from McMurrich:
* All students should arrive at school at 8:15 am
* Students will be returning to school at 3: 55 pm
